Ep: 111 Let Food Be Thy Medicine Says Hippocrates

The Father of Medicine figured out a very very long time ago, that how we eat determines how well we feel and ultimately the health we radiate.

In today’s episode I discuss the power of flaxseeds and how to add them to your life EVERYDAY.

The benefits of flaxseeds; high in fiber, lowers blood sugar, high in Omega 3s fatty acids, promotes good cholesterol, anti aging,  treats many menopause symptoms, anti fungal, anti viral, good for muscle pain and known to reduce the symptoms of arthritis.

So, how the heck to we add it to our lives? You can add it to muffins, pancakes, cereals like oatmeal and cream of wheat and you can add it to your daily green smoothie.

First recipe discussed today; Green Flaxseed Smoothie-

20 oz water, 1-3 cups kale, 2T. Ground Flaxseeds, 2T. Chia seeds and 1-2 cups frozen fruit. You can also add an apple or a banana.  Blend and enjoy!

Second recipe; Flaxseed Oatmeal-1/2 oats,  1T. brown sugar, pinch of salt, pinch of cinnamon cover mixture with hot water and cook a few minutes, then just before eating toss in  1-3 T. ground flaxseeds and the sweetener of choice then stir and eat.

Next we have 4 no cook flaxseed oatmeal recipes variations; put them it in your fridge and eat the next day.

In a small mason jar add to each recipe; 1/2 Cup Oats, 1-3 T. flax seeds, 1T Chia seeds, 1/3 Nut Milk, Sweetener of choice about a tablespoon.

Then you can change it up, by adding blueberries, vanilla, maple syrup, honey, lemon zest, yogurt, almond extract, or any other fruit dried of fresh. Put it in your refrigerator and the next day it’s ready to be topped with a little more nut milk and drizzled with agave nectar.

Next, Flaxseed Cookies-1C. Flaxseed ground, 1C. Almond Flour, pinch salt, 1/4 1/2c maple syrup, 1/4c. water, 1t. vanilla. Roll into cookie and flatten at bit on parchment paper. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and 18 minutes.  Check every 5 minutes.

Flaxseed Crackers 175 degrees 2 hours then turn over and bake another 30 min.

2Cups Whole Flaxseeds, 3Cups Water set aside 15 minutes while you chop;1/4c bell peppers, 1/4c  cilantro, 1/8c red onion, 2tsp. garlic and 1/4c green chilies. Add all ingredients and stir. Then add juice of one lime and sprinkle with salt. Spread on a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Final recipe for today, bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees. Please preheat oven

Flaxseed Crackers; 1c. sunflower seeds, 1/2c whole flaxseeds, 1/3c roasted pumpkin seeds(pipitas), 1/4c roasted sesame seeds, 1 1/2c oats, 2T Chia seeds, 4T psyllium husk, 1 1/2 tsp Salt, 1T sweetener, 3T. Coconut oil, 1 1/2 cup water.  Then roll on to parchment paper on cookie sheet and bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees. Please preheat oven.

And last tidbit, you can just put ground flax seeds in a bowl, add nut milk and sweetener and eat. It’s that easy.

Ep 83: How to quit smoking for GOOD.

Hello everyone, if you are listening to this podcast, then you either are a smoker or you know someone who is and the title has intrigued you. Either way, welcome. So, I was once a smoker, that makes me completely experienced in how to quit for good. I also have treated many people via acupuncture when my patients had heard that acupuncture can help. This also makes me very aware of the process from a clinical perspective. I have helped many people successfully quit.

So, let’s get started. There are many reasons people start smoking, but why do they continue to smoke when they know on some level that smoking is unhealthy, smoking costs money, smoking could lead to an early death, smoking could lead them to a painfully slow death, smoking could create the desire to smoke for their children, smoking is expensive, smoking bla bla bla. Right? And of course there are more and more reasons to not smoke, but the point is with so many reasons to quit, why do they continue to smoke?

Some might say the nicotine is incredibly intense and it’s powerful claws are the reason that the smoker can not stop. Some might say, they enjoy it and the joy of smoking is why they can not stop and the reasons here are vast as well. It does not matter really why they are convincing themselves that they need to smoke or can not quit. If you are here, listening to this podcast, then you are wanting to quit. Right?

Here are some major components to consider when creating your plan to stop smoking for good.

  1. Association-what is your smoking connected to?
  2. Habits-how to change bad ones into good ones
  3. Stress Monitor-what can you use to relieve stress instead of a cigarette?
  4. Hand-Mouth-anxiety- 
  5. Thought Process-beliefs-which ones are holding you back?
  6. LifeStyle; association, drinking, bar scene, family and friends.
  7. Dependence-emotional -how to re-define
  8. Leverage- solid reasons to help you not re-start and quit.
  9. Habit Changes-substitution method
  10. Stress management-good sleep, good nutrition, cellular hydration will help
  11. Replacement
  12. Beliefs-key is in your beliefs
  13. Goals-what do you want to do instead?

The success is in the desire behind the decision to quit. And knowing that you must draw an absolute to never ever have another cigarette.

Today’s episode is about the eight foods that I recommend avoiding for better health, however I also encourage you to make your own list,  if my list is too far from where you are now. I mention that being honest with yourself is important, knowing what you are putting in your body, how many calories, how much is good for you and how much of what you eat or drink is toxic?

I also mention one of my go to salad dressings, but I left out a key ingredient: Lime Juice. So the dressing, is avocado, lime juice,  balsamic vinaigrette and olive oil.

The 8 foods on my list; oil, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, chips, bread, salt, flour, gluten and all processed foods with emphasis on candy. Some of these were combined with others.

I also mention that Chlorophyll and Hemoglobin differ by only one atom . Magnesium for chlorophyll and Iron for Hemoglobin. I share this because I want you to eat more plants and ask yourself daily, did I eat any chlorophyll today?

Today’s episode is about calling forth the leverage to remind us why exercise is the key to burning fat more so than reducing fuel consumption. How many times do you hear someone say that they exercise and eat well and still do not lose any weight? Or they announce that they lost 10 pounds and turn around and gain 25 pounds back?

This is because of the need to inhale 64 pounds of oxygen to lose 22 pounds of fat. Not 22 pounds in total but 22 pounds of fat. Yeah, you read this right. That sounds crazy right?

According to Ruben Meerman, 84% of fat loss turns into carbon dioxide leaves the body via the lungs and the 16% left over becomes water which is then excreted via urine, sweat, feces, tears etc.

Today’s episode is all about making sure that you do not gain weight during the holidays and additionally how to lose 15 pounds when most everyone else is gaining weight.

There are 7 key areas that are covered; #1: Desires, tastes, smells that are pulling on us at all times.#2: Coping with life; the anxieties that come with the holidays such as additional money for gifts etc., #3: Habits around food; to include mindless eating. #4: Lack of planning what we are going to eat and therefore just grabbing something to eat which almost always leads to high calorie, high fat, low quality foods. #5:Lazy; we all allow ourselves to be lazy during the holidays and this leads to bad choices when it comes to food. #6: Lacking Motivation; we allow the people in our lives that are not wanting to lose weight or not wanting to lose weight now, influence us to put off what we can do now. They think that we will eat now, gain now and lose later. This is THE NUMBER ONE REASON the average person gains 15 pounds during the holidays. Do not allow other people to rob you from feeling good. #7: Lacking knowledge; we do not do our homework and learn how many calories we are eating and drinking. We do not learn and study what we eat and this lack of knowledge is the main reason we choose to drink a high calorie drinks or eat a high calorie meals. We just did not know.
We go over the things you can do to beat the odds and not gain weight during the holidays and how you can actually lose weight instead.
We also go over things that you can do to boost endorphins without eating to ensure that you are feeling good.

Main advice: Write down all of the foods you eat regularly and that you usually eat during the holidays. Look them up on google and know what it is costing you calorie wise before you eat or drink it.
